July 2017, Chicken Little Portfolio Performance

In July 2017, the Chicken Little Portfolio lost 0.10% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.77%.

The best investment of 2017 has been cryptocurrencies. There are close to 1,000 different types of 'coin.' The most famous being Bitcoin and Ethereum. Chicken Little made a tiny investment in cryptocurrencies in May 2017.

July 2017 performance

Chicken Little lost fractionally in July because of a similarly modest decline in the price of long-term US Treasury bonds.  The Dow Jones industrial average continues to pile on gains with a year to date return exceeding 10%.

The only way to lose in 2017, has been not to invest. Non-US stock markets have outperformed US stocks with the emerging market stocks gains exceeding 25%. 

The frothiness in global stock markets has exploded in the cryptocurrency world. Investors in bitcoin have made as much in 6 months as stock market investors made in the last 8 years - even if stock investors bought on the absolute low in March of 2009 when the Dow was at 6,443.

August 2017 portfolio positions

As of August 2017, Chicken Little is long US Treasuries with a good amount of cash, and a tiny amount of cryptocurrencies and stocks. 

Chicken Little bought the cryptocurrency Ethereum at $195 and Bitcoin at $2,370 in May 2017.  The returns on these investments have been incredible. Nevertheless, the equally incredible risk in cryptocurrencies has led Chicken Little to continue to trim the position to 30 basis points. Chicken Little made no significant changes to the portfolio in July of 2017.
